Men’s policy in the NT

It’s great to see the Northern Territory developing action to address male health and wellbeing, through its Men's Places Policy and Program which supports the NT Gender Equality strategy. The NT Government has allocated $100,000 towards specific male programs, which will be distributed through $10,000 grants to local community organisations.

Importantly, the Territory appears to have a policy officer focusing on men in the public service. Effective programs and services can best be developed when their is policy focus in the government and public service, along with community based not-for-profits. NT shows this partnership approach in action.

Tasmania is well-placed to take up such an opportunity, with several organisations focused on male wellbeing keen to progress their agenda, but lacking real intention and policy direction from government. While there are strong gender policies and activities, they tend to be gender biased rather than gender inclusive.

MRT looks forward to seeing more nuanced approaches to policy, that includes recognising and addressing areas where men experience poorer outcomes, as well as the areas where women and other population groups experiences inequality.
