Eat your porridge, grab your drum, and join us for a walk this mental health day.

Most days of the year have been claimed for various causes, and 10th October is of course World Mental Health Day.  What better way to celebrate than out with your mates for a stroll.

What you may not realise is that 10 October is also a day to celebrate various other causes.  Why not prepare for your walk, and kick of celebrations with a hearty bowl of oats in honour of World Porridge Day?  Or if you bring a drum along, you might get lucky as it is also International Hug A Drummer Day!

It's good to be aware that it is also World Homeless Day, so why not celebrate Handbag Day, by taking out your purse or wallet and throwing in a few bucks in the tin for one of Tasmania's homeless charities.  MRT is proud to be partnering with the Men's Table, along with various other groups and sponsors to support the inaugural Men's Walk in Launceston.

Whatever you want to celebrate, sign up for the walk at: https://events.humanitix.com/launniemens5kmwalk and we'll look forward to seeing you on Sunday 10 October in Mowbray. Bring your mates, grab a snag and enjoy your Sunday.

We're excited to be able to release a report into Funding Men's Health in Tasmania, thanks to the great work of our friends at the Australian Men's Health Forum.  Earlier this year AMHF conducted research into Australians attitudes to supporting and funding initiatives that seek to improve men's health, and found overwhelming support.

This report focuses on the Tassie data, and adds detail from the Tasmanian Suicide Report and the last State budget.  Its clear Tasmanians support funding for initiatives that support improving male health outcomes, and that the need for some changes in approach is needed.

See our article in the Mercury today, and also check in with ABC radio Hobart at 7.50 this morning to hear about our Vigil this evening.

It's time to fund preventive approaches for male health and wellbeing. Did you know:

    • in May 2021, the Federal Government allocated $3.4B to its Women’s Budget including $535.8m for the National Women’s Health Strategy, and there was no Men’s Budget and no funding for the National Men’s Health Strategy?
    • in the 2020-21 Tasmanian Budget, the government allocated close to $6 million in programs supporting women health and wellbeing, and  $665,000 on male specific programs through Men’s Sheds and accommodations for Homeless Men, and over $200 million towards prison development and upgrades?

We're calling on the Tasmanian Government to direct funding to activities and programs that work to improve male health outcomes.  For more info and details on our Vigil on 23 August 2021, visit https://mrtasmania.org/24-7

    Hi all

MRT held another successful AGM last night in Hobart. Thanks to all who came along.  We'll share more about the board and annual report soon.  First I wanted to share this brief slide show presented by Glen Poole from the Australian Men's Health Forum.  The first few slides provide a bit of back story, and then goes to an overview of the key current issues and the 'ABCD' of the work AMHF is focused on.  If your work includes an interest in working with men, check the presentation out.

The Dads' Book is here.  We're excited to be able to share this fantastic resource with dads-to-be, dads and organisations working to support new parents.

We're grateful to Hydro Tasmania, Hobart FriendlyCare Pharmacies and TasTAFE for their support in developing this important resource.

The book is currently available electronically here*.  Hard copies will be available soon, and can be purchased via our shop.  We'll be making this resource to new dads via services working directly with new parents.

*This version is still in draft as there are minor changes we need to make before going to print.
